Information from donor:
This film was shot during the summer of 1959 and attempts to show life in Dumbarton at that time.
Three main industries are represented; Denny Shipbuilders, Hiram Walkers, distillers, and The Scottish Gas Board all of which no longer exist in the town. At the time Denny was developing prefabrication of their ships and this features prominently in the film. The firm of Durance also gets a brief shot. This company subsequently became Diamond Power and has now moved to a new location in the area.
The material in the school, Dumbarton Academy, shows a simple experiment in a chemistry class and in an English one. The amounts being recorded on the board, in the latter, are a record of fund raising to improve the library. (Funds were short - some things don't change!). The school's sports day is also featured. Brief shots of Dumbarton FC playing at their old 'Boghead' ground, one of the oldest in the country now given over to housing, are followed by some of the surrounding countryside ending in a classic sunset over the town.
Due to limitations of KodachromeII film much of the footage was shot outside limiting coverage of the industries. The film had a soundtrack recorded on tape and was synched to the film using the Eumig system. Film speed is 16fps.
