Description: A film crew spend a day documenting an episode in the life of a Pakistani shop owner, who arrived in Britain thirty-eight years ago with nothing. We are led into this world of the shopkeeper, in which we get a glimpse of how he conducts his business through the interactions he has with some of his customers. He is from a generation who believes in working long hours, of looking after every penny. A generation who still harbour a dream of returning home one day as rich men. Yet all is not right with the corner shop. As the day unfolds, something else is revealed. Something that could be one of many reasons as to why ‘The Corner Shop’ is now in very steep decline.

Comment from director Zak Hanif: "I wanted to make a film which I thought depicted a part of British Asian culture. But, what I didn't realise was that over the weeks of numerous drafts and re-writes it had evolved into something extremely personal. At the time I wasn't too concerned with the style, though I felt it needed to look and feel like a documentary which would give it directness and also help the story along. And, since this was my first film I was extremely fortunate to have worked with experienced film makers as well as a talented cast." [from BBC Film Network website, last accessed January 2009.
