Biography of 'COOPER, Henry'
Cameraman and film-maker
Born: 1911
Died: 1983, Hastings
Cooper worked as cameraman for Scottish Film Productions in Glasgow between 1938 – 1944. He shot titles for the first Films of Scotland and various manufacturing companies made for screening at the Empire Exhibition, Glasgow in 1938, including A Romance of Engineering for William Beardmores Ltd.
After spending a number of years with a variety of London companies such as British Films (c.1940), he returned to Edinburgh and joined Campbell Harper Films in 1949 becoming a co-director of the company for more than twenty years. Amongst the productions of which he was most proud, were two made for Educational Films of Scotland, Edinburgh and Victory Over Pain. Edinburgh (1966) looked at everyday life in Scotland’s capital and its history. The film was distributed throughout the world in five foreign language versions and was adopted by the Central Office of Information. Victory Over Pain told the story of James Young Simpson’s discovery of the anaesthetic effects of chloroform.
Cooper directed several films for the second Films of Scotland Committee under the banner of Campbell Harper Films. He retired at 62 years due to failing eyesight from which blindness quickly followed. Ten years later he died in Hastings, age 72.
