Description: Educational film demonstrating the methods and machinery used in the cultivation and harvesting of cereal crops.

Shotlist: Title. The cereal year begins in November with the preparation of the land for wheat Horse drawn plough; tractor drawn 2 blade plough, then tractor drawn harrowing. The seed is sown in November gvs same Before sowing, the seed may be treated for disease with a mercuric compound c/u seed poured into mixer; c/u ICI AGROSAN G DRY SEED DRESSING; seed is mixed with same and poured into sack. Gvs loading hopper and sowing field; c/u same. Manure is applied at the time of sowing and the seed-bed harrowed gvs same In the spring the young crop is top-dressed, harrowed and rolled gvs men broadcast fertiliser, apply by horse drawn hopper & tank; horse drawn harrow & roller. Oats and barley are similarly treated but sown from late Feb. to April c/u loading hopper Summer work consists of weed-killing by means of sulphuric acid Horse draws barrel & motorised spraying equipment. Ws men fill barrel from glass bottle; man crank starts motor; men adjust nozzles by hand Harvest extends from August to October man reaping with sickles, three men work down row. Ls man hones scythe; reaping barley by scythe. C/u woman making tie for sheaf. Three horses draw reaper binder; brief shot horses eating barley? [Col] Two paired teams draw reaper binders. [Bw] Tractor drawn reaper binder; c/u moving parts of stationary reaper binder. Gvs workers collect sheaves, man builds into stack. Building haystack into rectangular wooden framework. Hay laid along fence. Man builds stack of sheaves using tripod. Forking hay onto cart. Forking sheaves to man who constructs circular stack, turning heads towards centre; thatching? same. Threshing is the final operation Unloading sheaves to cart then barn, man feeds into thresher; ints hay emerging other end. Exts. work party operating thresher/baler, feeding, wiring, then stacking in field with raked 'roof' The crop may be completely mechanised in which case the grain is dried gvs four furrow plough, drawn by MH tractor and Caterpillar tractor. Fertiliser powder is dispensed from two hoppers; filling hoppers. Sowing field; harrowing. Massey Harris combine harvester in operation. Filling lorry from stationary combine; lorry departs. Gvs Clayton combine harvester. MH and Clayton combines harvesting field. Tractor driven baler. C/u moving parts; baler in action. Unloading hay. Ints. unloading grain, c/u moving parts; furnace.
