LAST KING OF SCOTLAND, the [7194]

Based on a book by Giles Foden, The Last King of Scotland tells the story of a fictional young Scottish doctor, Nicholas Garrigan, who comes to Africa largely to escape the boredom of home, with a vague notion of doing good work. His arrival coincides with Amin's rise to power, and a chance encounter leads to the offer of a position as Amin's personal physician. Wooed by the president's generosity, charm and apparent populist appeal, Garrigan agrees, and soon finds himself appointed number one advisor on all manner of subjects, from architecture to foreign policy. Hugely flattered at first, the doctor does not really want to see what is going on around him, and by the time he is forced to face up to the savage atrocities of Amin's command, he is already in over his head.
