In 1969 an extensive bulb growing industry was started at Paible in North Uist. A key factor in the choice of North Uist for this scheme was the disease-free nature of the machair soil.
See television programme 'EORPA' for documentary about the project to start industrial growing of flowers. (Transmitted BBC Scotland, 15th September 1994)
