Shotlist:
Starting with independence celebrations in Malawi, this film traces the influence of Church missionaries in the country. The church is seen to have an influence in the education of children and the training of adults in such areas as teaching and medicine. Literacy and the spread of the Christian message across the country, by way of books and radio programmes is explored, as is the role of the church in helping people (especially women) come to terms with moving from villages to towns. The shortage of Christian teachers and ministers is discussed, and the low wages they receive, but Christians are shown making a tangible difference (helping in agricultural projects, for example) (32.35)
