Previously catalogued as (POSSIBLY RANGERS v HEARTS 1952?) but amended due to public appeal for information, August 2011. [Verified by Mark Wylie, Curator at Manchester United Club Museum at Old Trafford and Rangers FC historian Robert McElroy.]
Manchester United beat Rangers 2-1, in front of a crowd of 75,546. This was part of a tournament organised by the English and Scottish F.A.s and Leagues and run as a knock-out competition between four English and four Scottish teams. Manchester United were beaten in the Semi-Final by Celtic, who went on to win the final on 20th May 1953.
The line-ups on 13th May (kick-off 7pm) were:
Rangers: Niven; Young; Little; Dunlop; Woodburn; Pryde; Waddell; McMillan; Simpson; Prentice; Hubbard.
Manchester United: Crompton; Carey; Aston; Gibson; Chilton; Cockburn; Violett; Downie; Rowley; Pearson; Byrne.
Scorers: Rangers- McMillan; Manchester U- Pearson, Rowley.
