Biography of 'Tree Films '
Production company
Bill Forsyth, Nick Lewis and Charles Gormley founded Tree Films in 1972 with the ambition of producing Scottish based feature films. Bill Forsyth had started in the film industry some few years previously when he answered an advert in the Evening Standard for a trainee position at Thames and Clyde Films. Working alongside Stanley Russell, he assisted in numerous productions before joining Eddie McConnell and Laurence Henson at IFA Scotland. Subsequently he attended the newly established National Film School in London, before moving back to Scotland to set up Tree Films. Charles Gormley had made a feature for the Children’s Film Foundation, documentaries for the Highland Board and Shell Oil and assisted on the South Bank Show. Like Forsyth, Gormley had assisted on IFA Scotland productions.
Tree Films were not to enjoy the success in feature film making that its three founders had hoped for. The company produced a number of documentary films for Films of Scotland, including A Place in the Country (1972), Polar Power (1974) and Keep Your Eye on Paisley (1975).
In 1979 after seven years Tree was wound down. However both Forsyth and Gormley went on to achieve success and acclaim in their own right as writers and directors with commercial successes such as Gregory’s Girl (1981), Local Hero (1983), Heavenly Pursuits (1986) and Living Apart Together (1983).
